P2196 - O2 SIGNAL BIASED / STUCK RICH SENSOR (BANK 1 SENSOR 1)
Description of DTC code P2196
The Oxygen (O2) Sensor tells the Powertrain Control Module(PCM) the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream between the engine and the Catalytic Converter (TWC) by means of a voltage signal.
This O2 Sensor signal changes at least 10 times every second within a range determined by the manufacturer. If the PCM detects that these changes are not taking place as expected, the DTC code P2196 OBDII is set next to the Check Engine light.
Symptoms of fault code P2196
- The MIL light turns on.
- Ignition failures.
- Fuel efficiency is lower than normal.
- Lower engine power.
Causes of OBD2 P2196
The reasons to set fault code P2196 OBD2 are the following
- Possibly the Oxygen Sensor is defective.
- Damaged O2 Sensor cables or connectors
- There may be a defective fuel injector.
- Extremely high or low fuel pressure.
- Intake air leaks.
- The Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) may be in bad condition.
Possible solutions of the DTC code P2196
When configuring the diagnostic code P2196 OBDII, you must take into account the following for its right solution:
- Check the appropriate TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) for your vehicle model.
- Check the Oxygen Sensor circuit and check with a voltmeter for a short to ground, power, or open circuit. If problems are found in the circuit, check all cables and connectors for wear, corrosion or other damage. Repair or replace.
- Check that the vacuum lines are in optimal condition for operation. If they are leaking, they must be replaced.
- Test that the ECT Sensor meets the voltage requirements indicated by the manufacturer. Replace it if it does not meet the specifications.
- Change the Oxygen Sensor.
