P1700 FORD, LINCOLN, MERCURY: TRANSMISSION SYSTEM PROBLEMS
The automotive transmission adapts the engine output to the drive wheels. In internal combustion engines, it is necessary operation at a relatively high rotational speed, which is unsuitable for slow travel, starting, and stopping. The transmission reduces the higher engine speed to a lower wheel speed, thereby increasing engine torque in the process.
The transmission is usually connected to the engine crankshaft using a clutch or fluid coupling. The output of this is transmitted through the driveshaft to one or more differentials that drive the wheels. Although a differential also provides a gear reduction, its primary function is to allow the wheels at each end of an axle to turn at different speeds, which is necessary to prevent wheel slippage during turns.
