Description of DTC code P1140

With the timing control system, you have constant hydraulic regulation and control of the cam phases, according to the fixed operating angle of the intake valve. The ECM (Engine Control Module) receives signals informing the position of the camshaft, crankshaft, engine coolant temperature, and engine torque. Based on this data, the ECM sends On/Off pulse signals to the solenoid valve that controls the timing of the intake valve, depending on driving conditions. This increases engine torque in the low/mid-speed range and output in the high-speed range.

The timing control solenoid defines how much oil and in which direction it will be sent by the intake valve timing control unit, or if necessary, stops the oil flow. When the pulse width is long, it is because the valve angle is advanced, but if the valve angle is retarded, the pulse will be shorter. In the case that both pulse widths are equal, the flow of oil pressure is stopped, thus fixing the angle of the control position valve.

The P1140 OBDII fault code setting occurs, in the case of Nissan and Infiniti, when the ECM encounters performance problems in the solenoid that controls the intake valve.
