Description of DTC code P1140 Generic

With the timing control system, you have constant hydraulic regulation and control of the cam phases, according to the fixed operating angle of the intake valve. The ECM (Engine Control Module) receives signals informing the position of the camshaft, crankshaft, engine coolant temperature, and engine torque. Based on this data, the ECM sends On/Off pulse signals to the solenoid valve that controls the timing of the intake valve, depending on driving conditions. This increases engine torque in the low/mid-speed range and output in the high-speed range.

The timing control solenoid defines how much oil and in which direction it will be sent by the intake valve timing control unit, or if necessary, stops the oil flow. When the pulse width is long, it is because the valve angle is advanced, but if the valve angle is retarded, the pulse will be shorter. In the case that both pulse widths are equal, the flow of oil pressure is stopped, thus fixing the angle of the control position valve.

The P1140 OBDII fault code setting occurs, in the case of Nissan and Infiniti, when the ECM encounters performance problems in the solenoid that controls the intake valve.

Symptoms of fault code P1140 Generic

    • Check Engine light illuminated.
    • The engine experiences varying levels of power loss.
    • At idle the engine exhibits instabilities.

    Causes of OBD2 P1140 Generic

The reasons for storing the P1140 OBD2 diagnostic code are:

    • The wiring harness related to the valve timing solenoid may have been damaged causing a short.
    • The control solenoid may be in bad condition.
    • The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) may be defective.
    • Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) could be in poor condition.

Possible solutions of the DTC code P1140 Generic

The steps to correct the DTC P1140 OBDII code are as follows:

    • Consult the TSB (Technical Service Bulletins).
    • Perform a scan of the vehicle in order to check if other error codes are stored, especially if they indicate specific faults to the Camshaft Position Sensor or Crankshaft Position Sensor, repair those codes first.
    • Check the solenoid circuit controlling the intake valve for damage to the wiring or connectors. If they are damaged by burns, wear or corrosion, make the necessary repairs.
    • Refer to the diagnostic steps for the timing valve solenoid and check that it meets the minimum voltage requirements. If the resistance of the solenoid is not as specified, replace it.

It is recommended that if you do not know the mechanics, you go urgently to a nearby garage and have an expert fix and correct this code on your car. If, on the other hand, you have the necessary knowledge to fix this fault, you can use some tools such as a certified OBD2 meter that will help you to remove this message or alert from the dashboard of your vehicle.
