P0742 - TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH CIRCUIT STUCK ON
Description of DTC code P0742
Vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions use a Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) between the engine and transmission. In this way, greater torque output from the engine and steering of the rear wheels is achieved. Both the engine and the transmission are connected by a fluid coupling mechanism system, which multiplies the torque resulting in the actual engine RPM and the input RPM of the transmission having a difference of at least 10 %.
Fault code P0742 OBDII is set when the TCM (Transmission Control Module) or PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects a fault in the circuit that operates the TCC solenoid.
Symptoms of fault code P0742
- Engine malfunction light illumination (Check Engine).
- The engine can be stopped at idle.
- Transmission overheats.
Causes of OBD2 P0742
The reasons for configuring error code P0742 OBD2 are:
- Transmission fluid may be dirty.
- Low transmission fluid level.
- The cables leading to the transmission may be subject to wear or similar damage.
- Problems with solenoid connectors.
- The Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid may be defective.
Possible solutions of the DTC code P0742
When establishing the DTC code P0742 OBDII you must take into account the following for its proper solution:
- Inspect if the set of transmission cables has some mismatched connections. If you see obvious damage, you should proceed to repair and if necessary replace any of these components.
- Verify the resistance in the TCC solenoid as well as the internal wiring of the transmission.
- Change the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid.
