P0603 - INTERNAL CONTROL MODULE KEEP ALIVE MEMORY (KAM) ERROR

P0603

Description of DTC code P0603

The KAM (Keep Alive Memory) is located in the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and stores data regarding the operating cycles. It is also worth mentioning that this memory varies according to the driving inputs and the sensor inputs. In case the car battery is disconnected, the KAM memory is cleared and the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), this happens because it uses the included learned parameters to run the engine and not the learned values according to driving habits. It remains in standby mode because each powertrain control unit has a learning module where all the vehicle driving data, information about fuel consumption, and engine performance is stored. If the control box constantly loses power, the DTC code P0603 OBD2 is set.

Symptoms of fault code P0603

Causes of OBD2 P0603

The reasons why the fault code P0603 can be set are the following:

  • The battery charge may be below the required level.
  • One of the battery terminals may be in bad condition and cause a voltage drop.
  • The power supply circuit of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) may be shorted.
  • Problems in the programming of the PCM.

Possible solutions of the DTC code P0603

The steps for the respective diagnosis and repair of the diagnostic code P0603 OBD II are:

  • You can start by charging the battery. Also, check the battery terminals as they may be corroded or mismatched. Change any of these if they are defective.
  • Check all grounding and the fuse box.
  • You can start the vehicle with the alternator disconnected. If the code is still present with the alternator disconnected, check the wiring system near the ignition system. If any of these components have any interference, they will affect the circuit.
  • Check the electrical connections of the spark plugs. Make sure there are no faulty cables that allow the ignition voltage to escape. Make the necessary repairs if you find problems with one of these components.
  • Check the PCM connector as water may be present.
