Description of DTC code C1189

The active brake booster consists of a vacuum brake booster, a control unit for the brake booster, and a Delta Road Sensor. If an erratic operation occurs in the Brake Booster System, which is caused by a loss of vacuum, the Delta Road Sensor will indicate to the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) actuator and the Electrical Unit (Control Unit) that a booster failure has occurred. As a result, the active booster will apply supplemental force to the master cylinder relative to the amount of force exerted on the brake pedal.

The diagnostic code C1189 OBD2 is set when an active booster failure is detected.

Symptoms of fault code C1189

  • Check Engine lamp illuminates.
  • ABS failure warning light illuminated.

Causes of OBD2 C1189

DTC C1189 OBDII is stored by the following factors:

  • ABS Control Unit/Actuator wires could have been damaged.
  • ABS Control Unit/Actuator circuit connections could be faulty.
  • The Brake Booster may be defective.
  • ABS Control Unit/Actuator may have deficiencies.

To troubleshoot the C1189 OBD2 fault code you must do the following:

  • Consult the TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins).
  • Check the wiring related to the ABS Control Unit/Actuator. Look for wear or burned-out conditions on these components. Repair or replace as necessary.
  • Performs electrical checks on the ABS Control Unit/Actuator circuitry. Checks connections for deficiencies causing malfunction. Makes corrections as necessary.
  • Check that the active brake servo is in good condition. For this diagnosis, it is necessary to follow the recommendations given by the manufacturer. If you determine that there is damage to the brake servo, proceed with the necessary adjustments.
